A bell tower is a tall structure made to hold one or more bells.

Some towers are part of a church, but others are secular. This means they belong to places like schools or city halls. A tower might be built just to hold a carillon. A carillon is a collection of bells played with a keyboard. In Italy, people often use the word campanile for a free-standing tower.

The tallest free-standing bell tower is the Mortegliano Bell Tower in Italy.

Bells help people hear important news from far away. In many Christian churches, bells call people to prayer. Some churches ring bells three times a day. Lutheran and Anglican churches ring them at 9 am, 12 pm, and 3 pm. Catholic churches often ring at 6 am, noon, and 6 pm. These bells call people to the Angelus prayer. Other groups, like Oriental Orthodox Christians, pray seven times a day. They use bells to mark these fixed prayer times.

Some towers even have an exconjuratory. This is a special space used for ceremonies to ward off bad weather.

There are many ways to make a bell sound. Some bells are stationary and are chimed. Other bells swing in a small arc. Some bells swing in a full circle for English change ringing. This method gives the ringer a high degree of control.

In a carillon, hammers hit the bells using cables. These towers can be found in many places in Europe and America. While some people use electronic devices to make bell sounds, real towers use real bells. This is because people invest a lot of money into these structures.

Bell towers have a very long history. Paulinus of Nola introduced church bells to the Christian Church in 400 AD. By the 11th century, towers for bells were very common. In the Middle Ages, some cities kept important documents in their belfries. Many belfries in Belgium and France are now UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In 1999, thirty-two Belgian belfries were added to this list. In 2005, the list grew to include more sites in Belgium and Northern France.

Different cultures have their own special bell towers. In China, these are called Zhonglou. They are often found in temple complexes or as civic buildings. They are sometimes paired with a drum tower. The Bell Tower of Beijing and the Bell Tower of Xi'an are famous examples. In Eastern Europe, bell ringing is a big part of the culture. Many Orthodox churches are built with tall bell towers. This tradition is similar to the Islamic adhan, which is a call to prayer from a minaret.
