A steeple is a tall tower on a building.

It often has a spire on top. Many steeples also include a belfry. A belfry is a space for bells. These towers are very common on Christian churches and cathedrals. For many people, a steeple is a special symbol. It acts as a marker for a church. It is a way to point toward heaven. This helps people think about God.

Building a steeple involves many different parts. It can be a part of the main building. Sometimes it is at the entrance. Other times it sits in the center. A steeple can even be a stand-alone structure. The tower is topped by a spire. The spire is the pointy part at the very top. These parts work together to make a grand shape. Builders use different ways to join them to the church.

Church towers have a long history. They were not part of churches for a long time. Bell towers first began to appear around AD 600. At first, these towers were quite modest. They were also entirely separate from the church buildings. Over many years, things began to change. Builders started to join the towers to the churches. They added more elaborate roofs to the tops. This led to the steeples we see today.

Being very tall can bring some hard jobs for a building. Steeples are often vulnerable to the weather. For example, lightning can hit a tall tower. This can start a fire inside the steeple. The Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Luxemburg, Iowa, lost its steeple to fire. This fire was believed to come from a lightning strike. Strong winds can also be a problem. In 1804, a great gale hit the Old North Church. A hurricane called Carol hit it again in 1954.

Earthquakes can also be a threat to these tall structures. Some churches in Romania have very slender steeples. More than half of those steeples have been lost to earthquakes. This shows how much force the earth can have. Tall towers are always reaching toward the sky. They stand as landmarks in many different places. People look up to see them from far away. They are a famous part of religious architecture around the world.
