A steeple is a tall tower built upon a building.

It is usually topped by a spire, which is a pointed structure. Many steeples also include a belfry, a space designed to hold bells. These towers are most common on Christian churches and cathedrals. In many traditions, the steeple serves as a clear marker for a religious building. It acts as an architectural metaphor. For many people, it is a symbol that points toward heaven. This design is meant to direct the minds of the faithful upward toward God.

Steeples can be built in several different ways. Some are incorporated directly into the entrance of a building. Others are placed in the very center of the structure. It is also possible for a steeple to be a stand-alone structure.

The construction typically involves a tower base and a spire at the summit. The tower may also contain other specific components like the belfry. These parts work together to create a grand and vertical shape.

Historically, towers were not always a part of Christian churches. They did not appear in church architecture until about AD 600. At that time, bell towers first came into use. These early towers were fairly modest in size. They were also entirely separate structures from the church itself. Over many centuries, architectural styles began to change. Builders eventually incorporated these towers into the church buildings. They also added increasingly elaborate roofs to the tops. This evolution resulted in the complex steeples we see today.

Because of their great height, steeples face unique physical challenges. They are often vulnerable to the power of nature. For example, lightning can strike a tall steeple. This can cause fires to start inside the tower. The Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Luxemburg, Iowa, is an example of this. That church lost its steeple to a fire believed to be caused by lightning. Tall structures must be built to withstand these sudden environmental forces.

Strong winds and storms also pose a significant threat to steeples. A steeple can be toppled by high winds or hurricanes. The Old North Church experienced this problem twice. A "great gale" toppled its steeple in 1804. Later, Hurricane Carol caused the steeple to fall again in 1954. These events show how much pressure wind can place on a tall, narrow object. Builders must consider these weather patterns when designing religious architecture.

Earthquakes represent another serious danger to these tall structures. This is particularly true for steeples that are very slender. In Romania, many churches feature unusually thin steeples. These structures are quite fragile during seismic activity. In fact, over half of these Romanian steeples have been lost to earthquakes. The height and narrowness of a steeple make it sensitive to the shaking of the ground.

Steeples remain a significant part of the global landscape. They are a common element of religious architecture worldwide. People use them to reach skyward toward the divine. They serve as landmarks that can be seen from a distance. Whether they are part of a large cathedral or a small church, they carry deep meaning. They connect the physical building to the spiritual ideas of the people who use them.
