Sacral architecture, also known as sacred or religious architecture, is the practice of designing and constructing spaces for worship. These structures include churches, mosques, stupas, synagogues, and temples. They serve as intentional spaces where people gather for prayer, meditation, or ritual.

Many cultures devote massive amounts of resources to these projects. Consequently, sacred buildings are often some of the most impressive and permanent monolithic structures created by humans. While many are large and public, some sacred spaces are non-monolithic and ephemeral. These smaller spaces can be intensely private and personal for the individual.

Architects use specific methods to create a sense of holiness within these walls. They often employ sacred geometry, which uses mathematical patterns, to guide the design. They also use iconography and semiotics, which are systems of signs and religious symbols, to communicate meaning.

One goal of this architecture is to make the boundary between matter and spirit feel transparent. Scholars suggest that the layout of a building affects the spiritual experience of the visitor. For example, longitudinal space emphasizes long processions during ceremonies. Auditorium space is designed for proclamation and response. New communal spaces often use a minimized scale to increase intimacy and participation.

Religious architecture has deep roots in the ancient world. In ancient Egypt, temples were often viewed as the dwelling place, or temenos, of the gods.

The Temple of Karnak at Thebes provides a massive example of this. It was constructed over a period of 1,300 years and is among the largest religious structures ever built. In Greece, classical architecture became well-known through stone temples. Around 600 BCE, the wooden columns of the Temple of Hera at Olympia were replaced by stone. The Parthenon in Athens is a famous example of this classical style. It served as both a treasury and a place for veneration.

In South Asia, Buddhist architecture began to develop in the third century BCE. Early Buddhists used two main types of structures: viharas and stupas. Viharas were originally temporary shelters for wandering monks during the rainy season. Stupas were built to safeguard and venerate the relics of the Buddha.

Over time, stupas were incorporated into larger halls called chaitya-grihas. The stupa eventually evolved into the pagoda, a tiered tower with multiple eaves found in China and Japan. In the 13th century, a Nepali architect named Araniko helped spread these architectural ideas to other parts of Asia.

Hindu temple architecture is a distinct tradition that has evolved for over 2,000 years. It is based on ancient religious texts like the Sthapatya Veda and the Vastu Shastra. These designs follow strict religious models that include elements of astronomy and sacred geometry.

In Hindu belief, the temple represents both the macrocosm of the universe and the microcosm of inner space. While the underlying forms follow strict traditions, the buildings often feature intense decorative ornamentation. This diversity is also seen in Indian architecture generally, which blends native traditions with influences from West and Central Asia.

European religious architecture underwent many stylistic shifts throughout the Middle Ages. Byzantine architecture evolved from Roman styles and introduced the Greek cross plan. Architects in this era invented systems like squinches or pendentives to transition from square walls to circular domes.

Later, Gothic architecture emerged in 12th-century France, famously starting at the abbey church of Saint-Denis. This style is known for its grand cathedrals, such as Notre-Dame de Paris. During the Renaissance, architects returned to classical ideals of symmetry and mathematical proportion. This era saw the rise of famous designs like Filippo Brunelleschi's dome for the Florence Cathedral.

As history progressed, the Baroque style introduced more drama to religious spaces. This style moved away from long, narrow naves toward broader interior spaces. It used light, shadow, and large frescoes to create a sense of movement.

In the modern era, architecture has often shifted toward simplification and the removal of ornament. This modernist approach is seen in many contemporary religious buildings. In the United States, Mormon temples have also evolved significantly. They moved from simple church-like structures in the 1830s to the decorated Gothic styles seen in Utah.

Today, these buildings continue to serve as vital centers for faith and community.
