A steeple is a tall tower on a building.

It often has a spire on top. A spire is a long, pointy part. Many steeples also have a belfry. A belfry is a place for bells.

Most steeples are on Christian churches. They act as a sign for the church. For many, they are a symbol. They point up toward heaven. This helps people think of God.

Long ago, towers were not part of churches. Bell towers first appeared around AD 600. At first, these towers stood alone. They were separate from the church building. Later, builders joined them to the church. They added fancy roofs to the tops. This led to the steeples we see today.

Being so tall can be hard. High towers face many dangers. Strong winds and hurricanes can topple them. In 1804, a great gale hit the Old North Church. A hurricane hit it again in 1954. Lightning can also hit a steeple. This can start a fire. Earthquakes can be a threat too. In Romania, many thin steeples have fallen during earthquakes.
