It stands tall in the city's central business district. This structure is very important for many different reasons. It is the second tallest freestanding structure in the Southern Hemisphere. Only the Autograph Tower in Jakarta, Indonesia, is taller. It is also the 28th tallest tower in the whole world.

People recognize it easily because of its unique design. It serves as both a place for tourists and a tool for technology.

Building such a huge tower requires a very careful way of working.

The main shaft is made of high-performance reinforced concrete. To stay steady, the shaft sits on eight legs. These legs rest on 16 foundation piles drilled deep into sandstone. The upper parts use steel and concrete to stay strong. A heavy steel framework supports the very top mast. This mast weighs over 500 tonnes.

Workers had to use a special crane attached to the tower to lift the mast. A helicopter was not strong enough to carry it.

History shows how much planning went into this project.

Architects first thought about building it on Upper Symonds Street. That plan was rejected because of viewshaft issues. Another early design used stainless steel, but it cost too much. The final tower was built between 1994 and 1997. Fletcher Construction was the builder for the project. Gordon Moller designed the tower's look. It finally opened to the public on 3 August 1997. It even won a National Award from architects.

There are many interesting facts about what happens inside.

About 1,150 visitors come to see the tower every single day. You can visit several levels, like the Sky Deck or the SkyBar. One restaurant is very special because it is a revolving restaurant. It turns 360 degrees every hour so you see everything. Some people even go SkyJumping from the observation deck. They fall at speeds of up to 88 kilometers per hour. A guide-cable keeps them safe from the wind.

Finally, the tower helps our modern world work every day.
