A Ferris wheel is a huge, upright wheel that rotates.

People ride in small parts called cars, cabins, or gondolas. These are attached to the rim of the wheel. As the wheel turns, the cars stay upright. Most wheels use gravity to keep the cars level. Some modern wheels use electric motors to do this work.

These rides are great for seeing the world from high up. Many people call them observation wheels because of this.

The way a Ferris wheel works is quite clever. The wheel rotates around a central point. Most designs use twin-sided support to hold the wheel up. As the wheel moves, gravity pulls on the cars. This pull keeps the passenger cabins facing the ground. This way, the people inside do not tip over.

Some newer wheels mount the cars on the outside. These use motors to rotate each car independently. This helps keep every passenger steady as they rise.

Wheels for fun have existed for many years. Some small wooden wheels might date back to the 1500s. In the 1600s, people in Bulgaria used pleasure wheels. These used chairs hanging from large wooden rings.

In 1848, Antonio Manguino brought the idea to the United States. He built a wooden wheel in Georgia. Later, William Somers built a fifty-foot wheel in New Jersey. He even received a patent for a "Roundabout" in 1891.

It was the tallest attraction at the Chicago World's Fair. This wheel had 36 cars for passengers. Each car could hold up to 60 people. The wheel could carry 2,160 people at once. It was very heavy and used a 71-ton axle. This massive part was made in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Today, Ferris wheels are at almost every big fair. Some are very old and still work. The Wiener Riesenrad in Austria was built in 1897.
