A drop tower is a thrilling amusement park ride.

It uses a tall central tower and one or more gondolas. A gondola is the seat that holds the riders. The ride lifts the seats to the very top. Then, it lets them fall fast toward the ground. This makes you feel weightless for a short time. This feeling is followed by rapid deceleration. Deceleration is when you slow down very quickly. People love the excitement of this sudden movement.

Most modern towers use a special way to stay safe. Many use a magnetic braking system to stop the gondola. Other versions use pistons and air pressure to work.

A company called S&S Sansei makes a different kind. Their rides use pneumatics, which means they use air pressure and steel cables. This allows the gondola to move at speeds faster than a free fall. Some of these rides can even move fast up the tower. They can also move the seats in the opposite direction.

Drop towers have a long and interesting history. One of the earliest versions was a parachute ride. It debuted at the 1939 New York World's Fair. This ride was inspired by training devices used in the Soviet Union.

Later, a Swiss company called Intamin helped make the modern version. They released an early model in the 1980s. In the 1990s, they improved the design with magnetic brakes. This led to much larger models like the Gyro Drop.

These rides come in many different sizes and styles.

Some are mass-produced for many parks. Others are custom builds made for one place. The Orlando FreeFall in Florida is a very tall model. It has a drop height of 120 metres. Its total structural height is 130 metres. Another famous ride is Falcon's Fury at Busch Gardens. It rotates riders so they face the ground before the drop. It then brings them back to an upright position.

Drop towers are part of a world of many rides. You might see them at places like Disney parks. Some towers are even built very high up. The Big Shot at The Strat is a high example. It is the highest situated drop tower in the world. These rides connect to the science of gravity and motion. They turn simple physics into a fun experience for everyone. People travel to many different countries to try them.
