Players launch a ball into a specially designed table. The ball bounces off many different obstacles. It might hit bright lights or bouncy bumpers.

You can also aim for ramps or specific targets. These shots help you score as many points as possible. Most games use only one ball at a time. However, some games have a special multi-ball phase. During these parts, many balls move around the table at once. The game ends when the ball is lost.

To keep the game going, you use flippers. These are small paddles that hit the ball. They allow you to redirect the ball before it falls.

In the past, machines were much simpler. Early versions were small and sat on bar counters. They used metal pins and small holes for scoring. Today, most pinball games are found in arcades. They live inside large cabinets called pinball machines. These machines use electricity to power lights and sounds. They even use small motors called solenoids. These can ring a bell or shoot a ball out of a bonus hole.

The history of pinball goes back a very long time. It started with outdoor games played on grass. People rolled balls or stones toward targets in games like bocce. These eventually became indoor games played on tables. In the 1750s, a game called bagatelle was invented in Europe.

This game used a coiled spring and a plunger. This plunger is the same tool used to launch balls today. In 1871, an inventor named Montague Redgrave patented his own version. His design used bells and a spring launcher. This helped turn the game into its modern form. His Redgrave Bagatelle tables were made until 1927.

By the 1930s, companies began making coin-operated machines.

A company called Gottlieb made a huge hit called Baffle Ball. It cost only one penny to play. In 1932, a man named Raymond Moloney created Ballyhoo. This game was so popular that he started the Bally company. Later, in 1947, Gottlieb released Humpty Dumpty. This was the first game to use player-controlled flippers. These flippers helped keep the ball in play much longer. In 1974, machines began using microprocessors. These are tiny computer brains that run the game. This change allowed for digital displays and complex scoring.

Pinball has changed a lot over the years. It moved from wooden tables to high-tech electronic machines. Many famous companies have helped build this industry. Names like Williams, Bally, and Gottlieb are very important. Today, many new companies still make these games. Companies like Stern Pinball and Jersey Jack Pinball keep the tradition alive.

You can still find these machines in many places. They bring people together to test their reflexes. Whether it is a classic machine or a new one, the goal is the same. You aim, you hit, and you try to beat the high score.
