A gondola lift is a clever way to travel through the air.

These systems use strong steel ropes to carry passengers above the ground. The ropes hang between two stations and sometimes use tall towers for support. A large motor or engine turns a big wheel called a bullwheel. This wheel pulls the rope in a continuous loop. This constant movement makes it a very steady way to travel. People use these lifts to cross mountains or move through busy cities.

How the cabins move depends on the type of grip used. Many cabins hold between two and fifteen people.

Some cabins use spring-loaded grips to attach to the moving cable. These special grips let the cabin detach from the fast rope at the stations. This allows the cabin to slow down so people can get on or off safely. At the station, rotating tires or chains help the cabin speed up or slow down. Once the cabin reaches the right speed, it reattaches to the moving rope. Some older lifts even required an operator to move the cabins by hand.

Modern gondola technology has a long and interesting history. The first modern enclosed cable car for passengers opened in 1908.

This happened in Bolzano, which is in the South Tyrol region. In the United States, the first ski resort gondola was built at Wildcat Mountain in 1957. That two-person lift served skiers for many years until it was removed in 2004. Today, we see many different types of lifts used all over the world. Some are even open-air cabins called cabriolets that leave passengers exposed to the weather.

There are many famous gondola systems in different parts of the world. The Mi Teleférico in La Paz, Bolivia, is the largest urban system. It acts as a main part of the city's public transit. In Canada, the Gondelbahn Grindelwald-Männlichen in Switzerland is one of the longest rides. Some systems, like the one in Lebanon, slow down so people can take photos of the view. Even theme parks use them, like the Disney Skyliner in Florida. This system opened in 2019 and connects several Disney resorts and parks.

Engineers also use cables to move things other than people. These are called ropeway conveyors and are often used in large mines. Instead of passenger cars, they carry containers filled with goods. Some of these systems are very long and can even use gravity for power. The weight of a full container going down a slope can pull an empty one up. This is a very smart way to save energy in the mountains. Whether moving people or materials, these cable systems connect places that might be hard to reach by road.
