These legs rest on 16 foundation piles drilled deep into sandstone. The upper parts use steel and concrete to stay strong. A heavy steel framework supports the very top mast. This mast weighs over 500 tonnes. Workers had to use a special crane attached to the tower to lift the mast. A helicopter was not strong enough to carry it.

Building a structure of this scale requires advanced engineering and specialized construction methods. The main shaft is built from high-performance reinforced concrete. To provide stability, the shaft sits on eight legs. These legs are supported by 16 foundation piles drilled deep into local sandstone. The upper levels are made of composite materials, structural steel, and precast concrete. The observation decks are clad in aluminum with blue and green reflective glass.

At the very top, a heavy structural steel framework supports the antenna mast. This mast weighs more than 500 tonnes. Because it was too heavy for a helicopter, workers used a crane attached to the tower to lift it into place. To remove that crane, they built a second crane on the upper part of the tower. This second crane dismantled the first one piece by piece.

Designing and constructing the tower involved many professional groups and careful planning. The project was part of the SkyCity Auckland casino complex. Fletcher Construction served as the contracted builder for the project. The engineering firm Beca Group managed the design and provided many services. These included structural, mechanical, electrical, and fire engineering. The tower was designed by Gordon Moller of Craig Craig Moller Architects. Architect Les Dykstra also served as the project architect. The construction took two years and nine months to complete. The tower officially opened to the public on 3 August 1997.

Level 50 houses the Sky Bar, while Level 51 contains the main observation deck. Level 52 features Orbit 360° Dining, which is New Zealand's only revolving restaurant. This restaurant turns 360 degrees every hour. Level 53 offers The Lookout observation deck and an ice creamery. For more adventure, visitors can participate in the SkyWalk or the SkyJump. The SkyJump allows people to fall from the observation deck at speeds up to 88 kilometers per hour. A guide-cable controls the jump to prevent collisions with the tower during wind gusts. The highest level is the Sky Deck, located just below the main antenna.

The Sky Tower is a highly significant piece of infrastructure for Auckland's communications. It hosts the Auckland Peering Exchange on Level 48. The aerial at the top contains the world's largest FM combiner. This device works with 58 wireless microwave links located above the top restaurant. These links provide television, wireless internet, and weather measurement services. The tower is the primary FM radio transmitter for Auckland. It broadcasts 23 FM radio stations and six digital terrestrial television multiplexes. It also serves as one of four terrestrial television transmitters in the area. This ensures coverage for parts of Auckland not reached by the main transmitter at Waiatarua.

Safety is a major priority for such a tall and busy structure. The tower is designed to withstand an 8.0 magnitude earthquake within a specific radius. It can also withstand winds exceeding 200 kilometers per hour. In very high winds, the tower is designed to sway up to 1.5 meters. To keep passengers safe, the lifts use technology to detect movement. If the sway is too high, the lifts automatically slow down or return to the ground. For emergencies, there are three fireproof refuge rooms on levels 44, 45, and 46. The central service lift shaft and stairwells are also fire-safety rated.

Beyond its practical uses, the tower is a famous visual landmark. At night, it is illuminated by energy-efficient LED lighting. This system replaced the older metal halide lamps to save power. The LEDs can create millions of different color combinations. The tower often changes colors to mark special events or holidays.
