This plan failed because the estimated cost was £16,000. Later, Royal Commissions were held in 1930 and 1946 to study the bridge's viability. The Auckland Harbour Bridge Authority was eventually formed by an act of parliament in 1950. The British firm Freeman Fox & Partners was chosen to design the bridge. Construction began in earnest in the mid-1950s using steel girders fabricated in England.
Construction was a difficult and dangerous process for the workers. Hundreds of labourers were employed, including 180 men sent from the United Kingdom. Progress was occasionally interrupted by worker strikes in 1956 and 1957. During construction, a large steel span nearly drifted away during a storm. A tugboat named the William C Daldy had to fight high winds for 36 hours to save it. Sadly, three men lost their lives during the building process. Their names are remembered on a memorial plaque at the Northcote end of the bridge.
Managing the bridge has involved various economic and structural challenges. For many years, it functioned as a toll bridge, which was the first in New Zealand. Drivers paid a fee to cross until the system was discontinued in 1984. This happened because the cost of collecting tolls became higher than the profits. Structurally, the "clip-on" lanes have faced issues with material fatigue and cracks. In 2007, authorities had to implement bylaws to restrict heavy vehicles from certain lanes. These rules were meant to reduce stress on the aging steel structures.
Today, the bridge is an essential part of Auckland's transport system. As of 2019, approximately 170,000 vehicles cross the bridge every single day. This includes over 1,000 buses during the morning peak hours. These buses are very important because they carry 38% of all people crossing during that time. While the bridge is excellent for cars, it has faced criticism regarding other users.
