A giant bridge crosses the water in New York.

The Verrazzano–Narrows Bridge is a giant bridge in New York City.
The bridge has two levels for cars to drive on. The top level has seven lanes. The bottom level has six lanes. This helps carry many cars at once.
People wanted a way to cross the Narrows for a long time. Some wanted to build a tunnel under the water. Others wanted to build a bridge. Many plans were stopped because of money or other problems. In the late 1940s, Robert Moses helped push for the bridge. Engineers designed the bridge to be very large. It opened on November 21, 1964. The bridge was named for Giovanni da Verrazzano. He was a European explorer. He was the first European to enter New York Harbor in 1524. For a long time, this bridge had the longest central span in the world.

Many people tried to plan a crossing for many years.
Engineers Othmar Ammann and Leopold Just designed the bridge.

This bridge is a record-breaker in many ways. It has the longest main span in the Americas. It also has the 18th-longest main span in the whole world. You can see it from many places in the city. The bridge collects tolls from drivers in both directions. From 1986 to 2020, only westbound drivers paid a toll. This was done to help reduce traffic jams.

Designing such a large structure requires complex engineering.
Before this bridge existed, many other ideas were proposed.
Other planners looked at building tunnels instead of a bridge. In 1923, a plan for a Staten Island subway tunnel began. This project was canceled two years later. In the 1930s, engineers also proposed vehicular tubes. These tubes would have connected Hylan Boulevard to 86th Street. Construction on these tunnels actually started in 1930. However, work stopped in 1932 because of a lack of money. The War Department also opposed bridge plans. They worried a bridge could block the Narrows during a war.
Robert Moses eventually changed the direction of the project.
The bridge holds several impressive records. It has a central span of 4,260 feet. For many years, this was the longest suspension bridge in the world. It held that title until the Humber Bridge was finished in 1981. Today, it remains the longest main span in the Americas. It is also the 18th-longest main span globally. The bridge also uses a specific toll system.
The Verrazzano–Narrows Bridge is more than just a road. It is a major link in the regional transportation system. It connects the highway systems of different boroughs and states. By spanning the Narrows, it helps integrate Staten Island into the city. The bridge has undergone many refurbishments over the years. These updates happened in the 1990s, 2010s, and 2020s. Such maintenance ensures the bridge remains safe for all travelers. It continues to be a landmark of New York engineering.
