Funding was difficult to secure until the 1966 Kingston upon Hull North by-election. During this time, Prime Minister Harold Wilson helped convince the Minister of Transport to approve the project. The bridge was eventually completed at a final cost of £91 million. It officially opened to traffic on 24 June 1981. Queen Elizabeth II performed the official opening ceremony on 17 July 1981.

A new electronic tolling system was introduced to reduce waiting times. Many users now use a device called a HumberTAG. This small electronic tag allows the system to recognise the user automatically. The toll is then deducted from their account. This allows for free-flowing lanes where drivers do not have to stop at a booth. Plans are currently underway to move to a completely free-flow system by 2026.
