Auckland is a vital economic hub for the entire nation. Its central business district is the leading economic center in New Zealand.

The geography of Auckland is defined by its unique position on a narrow isthmus. This strip of land sits between two major bodies of water. To the east lies the Waitematā Harbour, which connects to the Pacific Ocean. To the west lies the Manukau Harbour, which connects to the Tasman Sea. This makes Auckland one of the few cities globally with harbours on two different oceans. The landscape is also shaped by the Auckland Volcanic Field. This field consists of 53 distinct volcanic centres.

Many of the surrounding hills are volcanic in origin. The area is bordered by several mountain ranges. These include the Hunua Ranges to the south-east and the Waitākere Ranges to the west.

Human history in the region began long before European arrival. Māori people settled the isthmus around the year 1350. They were drawn to the area because of its fertile soil. The Māori name for the area is Tāmaki. This translates to "Tāmaki desired by many." This name reflects how valuable the natural resources were to the people. Many fortified villages, known as pā, were built on volcanic peaks. By the early 1700s, a group of tribes called Te Waiohua lived there. Later, the Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei became the main tribe. Before Europeans arrived, the Māori population reached about 20,000 people.

European history began in earnest after 1840. Following the establishment of a British colony, William Hobson chose Auckland as the capital. Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei provided a strategic gift of land to Hobson for this purpose. Auckland served as the capital from 1841 until 1865. At that time, the capital moved to Wellington. Despite losing its status, Auckland continued to grow rapidly. Early growth was driven by its busy port. It was also fueled by logging and gold mining in the surrounding areas. Later, dairy farming and manufacturing helped the city expand further.

In the modern era, Auckland has transformed into a highly multicultural and cosmopolitan city. The population has become incredibly diverse. In 2016, 39% of residents were born overseas.
