Many people see it as an icon of the city. It helps move huge amounts of traffic every single day.

Building the bridge was a massive job that took four years.

First, workers had to reclaim land at the Westhaven Marina. Then, large steel girder pieces were made in England and shipped to New Zealand. These heavy parts were floated into place on construction barges. During a storm, a tugboat named William C Daldy had to pull a drifting span for 36 hours. The bridge was built from both sides of the harbour until they joined in 1959.

It rises 43.27 metres above the high water.

People have wanted a way to cross this water for a long time. As early as 1860, an engineer named Fred Bell suggested a crossing. His plan used floating pontoons, but it was too expensive. Later, the Auckland Harbour Bridge Authority was formed in 1950. They hired a British firm called Freeman Fox & Partners to design it. The bridge officially opened on May 30, 1959. Lord Cobham, the Governor-General, performed the opening ceremony.

On its open day, 106,000 people walked across it.

There are many interesting facts about how the bridge works and grows. The original bridge had only four lanes of traffic. By 1965, the number of cars was much higher than anyone expected. To fix this, a Japanese company added two lanes to each side.

These extra parts are called "Nippon clip-ons." In 2019, about 170,000 vehicles crossed the bridge each day. This included more than 1,000 buses. The bridge also used to be a toll bridge where drivers paid money to cross.

Today, the bridge is a vital path for many different people. It allows ships to reach the Chelsea Sugar Refinery wharf. While it is great for cars, some people wish it had more paths for walking or cycling.

In 2016, a plan called SkyPath was approved but not built. In 2021, the government announced the Northern Pathway for cyclists, but that was not built either. Even so, the bridge remains a key link for the whole region. It connects people to jobs and homes every single morning.
