The Manhattan Bridge is a famous suspension bridge in New York City. It crosses the East River to connect Lower Manhattan with Downtown Brooklyn.

This bridge is one of four ways to drive between Manhattan Island and Long Island. It is a very important path for many people every day. The bridge is special because it was the first suspension bridge to use a Warren truss. A truss is a frame made of connected parts that adds strength. This design helped shape how other long bridges were built in the early 20th century.

How does such a large bridge stay up? The bridge uses four main cables to hold its weight. These cables travel between heavy masonry anchorages on each side of the river.

To keep the road steady, there are 1,400 vertical suspender cables hanging from the main ones. The roadway itself has different levels for different things. There are seven lanes for vehicles, with four on the top level and three on the bottom.

There are also four subway tracks that run along the sides of the lower roadway. This way, many different types of transport can use the same bridge.

Building the bridge was a long and difficult project. The plans were first proposed in 1898. At first, people called it "Bridge No. 3." It was finally renamed the Manhattan Bridge in 1902.

The designer was Leon Moisseiff. Construction moved in stages over many years. Foundations for the towers were finished in 1904. The anchorages were completed in 1907, and the towers were finished in 1908.

It finally opened to traffic on December 31, 1909.

Many people worked hard to make the bridge a reality. To make room for the paths leading to the bridge, many families had to move. About 145 lots in Brooklyn and 173 lots in Manhattan were taken for the bridge.

The project also faced some hard times. There were legal fights over which companies would build the steelwork. The cost of the bridge also went up. It started with a $10 million grant, but the total cost reached about $22 million.

Today, the bridge is a busy part of the city. It carries streetcars, which began in 1912, and subway trains, which started in 1915.

Sometimes, the bridge needs repairs because of how it is used. The heavy weight of the subway trains caused the bridge to tilt to one side. Because the weight was not even, workers had to do a big reconstruction between 1982 and 2004.

You can still see beautiful art at the ends of the bridge. The plazas designed by Carrère and Hastings include a famous arch and colonnade in Manhattan.
