It stretches across the water from the city to the North Shore. Many people call it "the Coathanger" because of its arch shape.

This bridge is very important for moving people and goods. It carries trains, cars, bicycles, and people walking. The view of the bridge near the Opera House is a famous image of Australia.

The bridge works using a large steel arch to support its weight. This arch is made of two large trusses with 28 panels each. The steel can actually grow on hot days. The height of the arch can increase by about 18 centimeters.

To hold the steel together, workers used six million rivets. A rivet is a metal pin used to join parts. Workers heated these rivets until they were red-hot. They then used a pneumatic gun to shape the metal.

Building the bridge took many years of careful planning. John Bradfield was the chief engineer for the project.

He is often called the father of the bridge. A British company named Dorman Long won the job to build it. They used designs inspired by the Hell Gate Bridge in New York.

Their work included using the Tyne Bridge design as well. Kathleen M. Butler helped manage many important details during this time.

There are many impressive facts about the size of the bridge. The total weight of the steelwork is about 52,800 tonnes.

About 79% of the steel came from England. The rest of the steel was made in Newcastle. The bridge opened to the public in 1932.

It was once the widest long-span bridge in the whole world. The arch itself has a span of 503 meters.

At each end of the arch, there are two concrete pylons.

These pylons are covered in granite stone. They were not built to hold the weight of the arch. Instead, they were added to make the bridge look balanced. Today, these pylons have many different jobs. One pylon has a museum and a lookout for tourists. Another pylon holds cameras to watch the roads.

Even the tunnels underneath use the pylons for ventilation.
