The Golden Gate Bridge is a world-famous symbol of San Francisco and California.

It spans the Golden Gate, which is a strait connecting San Francisco Bay to the Pacific Ocean. This bridge provides a vital link between the San Francisco Peninsula and Marin County. It carries several roads, including U.S. Route 101 and California State Route 1. Pedestrians and bicyclists also use the bridge to cross the water.

Many people call it one of the most beautiful bridges in the world. It is even recognized as one of the Wonders of the Modern World.

This bridge is a suspension bridge, which is a type of structure that hangs from large cables.

The design uses a special idea called deflection theory. This theory allows the thin, flexible roadway to flex in the wind. This movement helps reduce stress by sending forces through the cables to the towers.

The towers are held together by 1.2 million steel rivets.

To keep workers safe, the chief engineer used movable safety netting. This netting saved nineteen men, who called themselves the Half Way to Hell Club. Sadly, eleven men lost their lives during the construction process.

Before the bridge existed, people had to use boats to cross the water.

Ferry services began as early as 1820 to move water to the city. By 1929, the Southern Pacific-Golden Gate Ferries, Ltd. was the largest ferry operation in the world. People wanted a bridge because the city was growing slowly without a permanent link. Some experts even thought a bridge was impossible to build there. They feared the strong tides, deep water, and thick fog would stop them.

However, the idea for a bridge became very popular in the early 20th century.

Joseph Strauss served as the chief engineer for this massive project. He worked with many other important experts to make the bridge a reality. Leon Moisseiff helped create the basic structural design for the suspension system. Irving Morrow designed the Art Deco details and the famous International Orange color.

He chose this color instead of the black and yellow stripes the Navy suggested. Charles Ellis did much of the difficult math and technical work. Although he did not get much credit during his life, the bridge district later gave him major credit in 2007. Construction began on January 5, 1933, and the bridge opened on May 27, 1937.

When it first opened, the Golden Gate Bridge held two big titles. It was the longest suspension bridge in the world until 1964. It was also the tallest suspension bridge in the world until 1998.

The project cost more than $35 million to complete. This was actually $1.3 million under the original budget. Today, the bridge is still a very important part of California. It connects people to the beautiful coast and helps the local economy thrive.
