It links the neighborhood of Ortaköy in Europe to Beylerbeyi in Asia. This bridge is very important for travel and helps people move between continents. It is a vital path for many people every single day.

This bridge works using a system of steel towers and cables. The road, called a deck, hangs from these steel cables.

These cables are held up by tall steel towers. The bridge is also gravity-anchored to stay steady. When it is fully loaded with traffic, the middle of the bridge sags a little bit.

This movement is a normal part of how the structure handles weight.

People have wanted to cross this water for a very long time. The Greek writer Herodotus wrote about a bridge made of boats in 513 BC.

That bridge was built for Emperor Darius the Great. In 1900, a company proposed a modern bridge with a railroad. The decision to build the current bridge was made in 1957 by Prime Minister Adnan Menderes. Engineers from Britain and America helped design the way it looks today.

Construction on the bridge began in February 1970.

It was finished on October 30, 1973. The project cost 200 million US dollars. At that time, it was the longest suspension bridge outside of the United States. Today, about 180,000 vehicles cross the bridge every day. Most of these travelers are driving regular cars.

Many interesting things have happened on this bridge.

In 2005, tennis star Venus Williams played a match on the bridge. A Formula One car also drove across it for a show. Every October, people run a big marathon across the bridge from Asia to Europe. The bridge also has a special light system by Philips. This system makes the bridge glow with different colors and patterns at night.
