The Bosphorus Bridge is a massive structure that connects two continents.

It spans the Bosphorus strait in Istanbul, Turkey. This bridge links Europe to Asia by connecting Ortaköy and Beylerbeyi. Officially, it is known as the 15 July Martyrs Bridge. It is the oldest and southernmost of three suspension bridges in the area. This bridge is a vital transport route for the region. It allows millions of people to move between Europe and Asia every year.

The bridge is a gravity-anchored suspension bridge. This means it uses heavy anchors to stay steady. The structure features tall steel towers and inclined hangers. The roadway, or deck, is aerodynamic and hangs from steel cables.

Because of its design, the bridge actually sags in the middle when it is fully loaded with traffic. The main span, which is the distance between the towers, is 1,074 meters. The total height of the towers is 165 meters. The deck sits 55 meters above the sea level.

The bridge handles a huge amount of daily traffic.

About 180,000 vehicles pass over it every single day. Almost 85% of these vehicles are standard cars. The highway is eight lanes wide in total. It includes three standard lanes and one emergency lane for each direction. There is also one pedestrian lane for each direction. During weekday mornings, four lanes run westbound toward Europe. In the evenings, the lanes switch to favor eastbound traffic toward Asia.

Humans have dreamed of crossing this water for thousands of years. The Greek writer Herodotus recorded a bridge made of boats in 513 BC. This pontoon bridge was built for Emperor Darius the Great. It helped his army move between Asia and Europe. In 1900, the Bosphorus Railroad Company proposed a modern permanent bridge. This plan included a rail link between the continents. However, the modern bridge we see today was not decided until 1957. Prime Minister Adnan Menderes made the decision to build it.

Engineering teams from several countries worked to make the bridge a reality.

The British firm Freeman Fox & Partners signed the structural contract in 1968. Engineers Gilbert Roberts, William Brown, and Michael Parsons designed the bridge. They also worked on the Humber and Severn Bridges. An American engineer named David B. Steinman also helped early on. Construction began in February 1970 and was completed on October 30, 1973. The total cost of the project was US$200 million.

When it opened, the Bosphorus Bridge was a world leader in engineering. It had the fourth-longest suspension span in the world in 1973. It was the longest suspension bridge outside of the United States. It remained the longest in Europe until 1981. It was also the longest in Asia until 1988. Today, it holds the 45th-longest span globally. The bridge also has a special LED lighting system by Philips. This system allows the bridge to glow with changing colors and patterns at night.

Many unique events have taken place on this bridge. In 2005, Venus Williams played a tennis match on it. This was the first tennis match played on two continents. In the same year, driver David Coulthard drove a Formula One car across it. Every October, the Intercontinental Istanbul Eurasia Marathon uses the bridge. During the race, all vehicle traffic is stopped. The bridge also has a significant history regarding its name. Following a military coup attempt on 15 July 2016, it was renamed. It now honors those who died during that event.
