The Istanbul Metro is a massive railway network in Turkey.

It helps millions of people move through the city every day. This system is very large and impressive. As of 2024, it is the 21st longest metro in the world. It also holds the title of the 4th longest in Europe.

The network covers 243.3 kilometers of track. Currently, there are 160 stations in service. Workers are also building 36 more stations right now.

How the system works depends on the city's unique geography. Istanbul is split by the Bosporus, a deep strait of water.

Because of this water, the metro lines do not connect directly. Eight lines stay on the European side of the city. Three lines run on the Asian side.

To link the two sides, people use the Marmaray commuter rail. This rail connects to the metro in several places. This way, travelers can still cross from Europe to Asia.

People have dreamed of a metro in Istanbul for a long time.

The oldest underground rail is the Tünel, which opened in 1875. This was the first underground line in continental Europe. Much later, a French engineer named L. Guerby made a plan in 1912. He imagined 24 stations between Topkapı and Şişli. Other planners like Henri Prost and Marc Langevin made more plans. However, these ideas did not happen for many years. The modern system finally began construction in 1989.

Building the tracks was a very big job for engineers.

They used a method called cut-and-cover to build the lines. This method helps the tracks stay safe during an earthquake. The system is built to withstand a 9.0 magnitude quake.

On the M2 line, workers found many old archaeological sites. These historical sites were found while drilling into the ground. This discovery slowed down the work for many stations. The M1 line was first called the "light metro." It uses shorter trains and shorter platforms than usual.

Today, the metro is a busy part of daily life.

Most lines run from 06:00 AM until midnight. Some lines, like the M5, are fully automated. This means they can run without a human driver. Passengers use a special card called the Istanbulkart to pay.

The fare for a ride is 40 TL. Students can pay a lower rate of 20.08 TL. Some lines even offer service 24 hours a day on weekends. This makes traveling through the huge city much easier for everyone.
