It helps people move quickly through the city. Today, the network has five main lines. These lines use a number and a color to help riders. For example, the U1 line is red.

The U2 line is purple. The U3 line is orange. The U4 line is green. Finally, the U6 line is brown. Many people use these trains every single day. In 2019, 459.8 million passengers rode the U-Bahn.

Learning how the system works is very interesting. Some parts of the tracks are quite old. The U4 and U6 lines use parts of the Stadtbahn. This was a city railway that opened in 1898. Other lines were built differently. The U1 and U3 lines were built as new subway tunnels. Some parts of the U2 and U6 lines started as tunnels for trams.

The trains run on a strict schedule. During the day, they arrive every two to five minutes. On Friday and Saturday nights, they run all night. On those nights, they come every 15 minutes. This helps people travel even late at night.

Planning for an underground railway in Vienna started a long time ago. People began thinking about it as far back as the 1840s. An engineer named Heinrich Sichrowsky had a plan in 1844. He wanted to use a pneumatic system. This means air pumps would move the trains.

Later, Julius Pollak had a similar idea in 1849. Many other plans were made over the years. However, most of these plans were not approved. The city had many different ideas for how to move people. Some plans were stopped by wars or money problems.

The modern U-Bahn we see today is much newer. Test operations for the new system began in 1976. The first new underground stretch opened on 25 February 1978.

This was the U1 line. The basic network was finished by 3 September 1982. Currently, the system has 109 stations.

The U1 line is 19.2 km long. The U2 line is 17.2 km long. The U3 line is 13.5 km long. The U4 line is 16.5 km long. The U6 line is 17.4 km long.

The system is still growing and changing. Workers are building a new line called the U5. This project was announced in early 2014.

Construction is expected to continue until 2032. When the U5 and U2 projects are finished, the network will be much larger. It will have 116 stations in total.

You can use one ticket for many things. The tickets are part of a group called the VOR. This means you can use them for trams and buses too. It is a way to make traveling easy for everyone in Vienna.
