It helps people move quickly through Toronto and the city of Vaughan. The Toronto Transit Commission, or TTC, runs the whole system. It is the busiest rapid transit system in Canada. On a typical weekday, it carries about 1.2 million riders.

The network includes 109 stations for people to use. There are many different lines that connect various parts of the region.

Each line has a specific name and a color. The colors help people find their way on maps. Line 1 Yonge–University is the longest and busiest line. It has a U-shape that connects Union Station to Vaughan Metropolitan Centre.

Line 2 Bloor–Danforth runs east and west through the city. Line 4 Sheppard is the shortest line in the system.

It is also the only line that stays completely underground. Line 5 Eglinton and Line 6 Finch West use light rail technology. These lines use tracks that sometimes run on the surface of the road.

History shows how the system grew over many years. The first line opened on March 30, 1954.

People called it the Yonge subway back then. It ran from Union Station to Eglinton Avenue with 12 stations. In 1963, the University subway opened as an extension. Line 2 Bloor–Danforth opened later in 1966.

A former line called Line 3 Scarborough closed in 2023. This happened after a derailment on July 24, 2023. Now, workers are building the Ontario Line. This new underground line will cost between $17 and $19 billion.

Understanding the subway is like understanding the veins of a city.

Just as your body uses paths to move blood, the city uses these rails to move people. The tracks act like roads that carry trains instead of cars. Some trains run deep under the ground in tunnels.

Other trains run in the middle of busy streets. This variety helps the city stay connected and moving every single day.
