It was the first rapid transit network in the Arabian Peninsula. Today, it moves millions of people every single year.

The metro works using a very smart way. All the trains are fully automated, which means they are driverless. They use special computer tools called SelTrac IS and NetTrac to move.

These tools help the trains run safely without a driver. Some tracks run deep underground in the city center. Other tracks run on elevated viaducts, which are high bridges. To keep passengers comfortable, the trains and stations have temperature control. This keeps the air cool even when it is hot outside.

Building this huge system took many years of planning. In 1997, leaders saw that the city needed more trains.
