Mumbai is one of the largest cities in the world. As of 2011, the metropolitan area had over 2 crore people. This large population makes moving around a very big job.

The metro works using different types of tracks. Most of the lines are elevated, which means they are built high above the ground. About 25% of the system is underground. A very small portion is built at-grade, or right on the ground.

When the whole system is finished, it will have sixteen high-capacity lines. These lines will connect to 350 different stations. This network will span a very large total distance. The different lines will help people reach areas not served by the existing suburban rail.

Building this massive system is a long project. It is being built in three phases over 15 years. The project is expected to be fully complete by October 2026.

In June 2006, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh laid the foundation stone for the first phase. Construction work actually began in February 2008. The first line officially started its operations on 8 June 2014. Some parts of the project faced delays due to land issues and environmental rules. However, new sections like corridors 2A and 7 opened on 2 April 2022.

Many different groups help run and build the lines. Blue Line 1 is operated by Mumbai Metro One Private Limited. This is a joint venture involving Reliance Infrastructure and the MMRDA.

Other lines, like 2 and 4, are built by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority. The completely underground Aqua Line 3 is built by the Mumbai Metro Railway Corporation Ltd. On 5 October 2024, a section of the Aqua Line 3 was opened. Later, on 9 October 2025, the Aqua Line extension to Cuffe Parade became fully operational.

The metro connects to many ways people travel in Mumbai. Most people in the area already use public mass transport. The existing suburban railway carries over 70 lakh passengers every single day.

The metro acts as a new way to travel alongside these older systems. It works with the BEST bus system to help people finish their journeys. This helps the city handle its rapid population growth. The metro is a key part of the city's modern transport plan.
