Today, the network includes 19 lines and 506 stations. It is a very busy place for travelers. In 2019, people took 3.88 billion rides on these trains. This makes it the number one busiest system on Earth. On a typical workday, more than 10 million people use the metro.

How does such a huge system work for so many people? It uses many different lines to connect many different areas. Some lines stay inside the city, while others go to the suburbs. One line even travels to a different province called Jiangsu.

The lines work together to form a giant web. This web carries people from the city center to far-away towns. It also connects important places like the Pudong and Hongqiao airports. This helps everyone reach their destination quickly and easily. The system is designed to handle a huge number of trips every single day.

The idea for these trains started a long time ago. In 1950, experts suggested an underground railway for the city. They thought it could be used for travel during peace. They also thought it could serve as a shelter during war.

In 1953, leaders drew the first plans for two main lines. These would run north-to-south and east-to-west. In 1960, workers even tested a small tunnel project. However, building the full system stopped for a while. It was not until 1986 that the government approved the big plan. This led to the first part of Line 1 opening in 1993.

Many important dates helped the metro grow into what it is today. Between 2003 and 2010, the system grew very fast. This growth happened because Shanghai was getting ready for the 2010 World Expo.

By the time the Expo arrived, the metro had 11 lines. It also had 407 kilometers of track and 277 stations. On March 9, 2024, the system set a new daily record. That day, people took 13.39 million rides. This shows how much the system has expanded since it first opened.

You can think of the metro like the veins in a body. Just as veins carry blood to every part, these tracks carry people everywhere.

The system is still growing and changing every year. Planners want the network to be even bigger in the future. They hope to have more than 2,000 kilometers of track by 2035. This will make it even easier for people to travel. The metro will continue to be a vital part of Shanghai life. It connects the past ideas of planners to the busy world of today.
