The Seoul Metropolitan Subway is a huge railway network in northwest South Korea. It helps millions of people travel every day through the Seoul Metropolitan Area. This massive system includes 24 different lines, such as rapid transit and light metro lines. Some lines reach the city of Incheon or even far rural areas.

These lines connect many different cities and towns together. It is a very important way for people to get to work or school. Without these trains, moving around such a large area would be much harder.

Many different companies work together to keep the trains running smoothly. Seoul Metro and Korail are two of the biggest operators in the system. Other companies, like Incheon Transit Corporation, run lines in their own cities. Most of the trains were built by a company called Hyundai Rotem.

To pay for a ride, people use a T-money smart card. This card uses RFID technology to send data without using any wires. You can also use a smartphone or a credit card to pay. This system even lets you transfer to other lines for free.

Building a subway is a very big job that takes many years. Construction on the very first line, Line 1, began in 1971. This line used a method called cut and cover to build the tracks. Line 1 finally began its service on August 15, 1974.

Since then, many more lines have been added to the map. Line 2 opened in 1980, and Line 3 opened in 1985. The newest addition to the network is the Sillim Line, which opened in 2022.

There are many interesting facts about how the stations and trains work. All stations have platform screen doors to keep passengers safe.

Most stations also offer free WiFi for everyone to use. Inside the trains, there are LCD screens that show news and stock prices. The seats are very comfortable because they have built-in heaters for the winter. In 2014, some stations even used special transparent displays for advertisements. These high-tech features make the subway a very modern way to travel.

Traveling on the subway is a bit like being part of a giant puzzle. All the different lines and companies fit together to form one big system. Some trains run on the right side of the tracks, while others run on the left. This happens because some lines are owned by the national government. The signs use Korean characters called Hangul, but they also use English. This helps people from many different places understand where they are going. It is a wonderful example of how technology helps a whole region stay connected.
