The metro is owned and run by Metro Railway, Kolkata. This group is a part of the Indian Railways. It is the only metro in the country controlled entirely by the Indian Railways.

The metro works using five different color-coded lines.

These lines use different types of tracks to move trains. Some tracks are broad-gauge and others are standard-gauge. The trains get their power from a 750 V DC third rail system. This means a special rail provides electricity to the trains. Some stations are underground, some are at ground level, and some are elevated.

Planning for this system started a very long time ago.

In 1919, a committee suggested a metro line for the city. They wanted to connect Bagmari to Salkia using a tunnel. However, the plan did not happen in 1923 because there was not enough money. Later, leaders like Bidhan Chandra Roy thought about underground railways again. In 1971, experts from the Soviet Union and East Germany helped make a master plan. Construction finally began in the early 1970s under Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Building the tunnels was a very hard job for the workers.

They used a method called cut and cover to build some parts. This means they dug a trench and then covered it up. For other parts, they used shield tunneling. This uses a large machine to dig through the earth. They even used compressed air and airlocks to dig in some areas.
