However, some heavy-rail lines, such as the Shinbundang Line and AREX, run on the left-hand track. Line 1 and the southern portion of Line 4 also use the left-hand track. This occurs because these lines are government-owned via Korail or involve through-running with government-owned lines. They follow a different standard used by national rail lines. This standard exists because much of the early Korean Peninsula rail network was constructed during Japanese rule. This connection between historical infrastructure and modern transit helps define the current layout of the entire system.
