The first elevated section opened on 25 December 2002. The first underground section opened on 20 December 2004. In 2025, the annual ridership was 2.35 billion people. The system is also very good for the Earth. In 2011, the United Nations gave the DMRC carbon credits. This was because the trains help reduce greenhouse gases. They reduce carbon emissions by 630,000 tonnes every year. Some lines, like the Magenta Line, can even run without a driver.

Connecting to other ways of travel is a key part of the system. The metro has special spots where you can switch to other trains. You can change to the Noida Metro or the Rapid Metro Gurgaon. To understand how the network grew, we must look at its development phases. Phase I was completed by 2006. It included a 64.75 kilometer network with 59 stations. This phase covered parts of the Red, Yellow, and Blue Lines. Phase II was finished in 2011. It added 86 stations and 10 routes or extensions. This expanded the network to 145 operational stations. Phase III was mostly complete by 2021. This phase added new lines like the Pink and Magenta Lines. A small extension to the Airport Line opened in 2023. Phase IV began construction on 30 December 2019. It is expected to be finished by 2026.

The history of the metro began with a 1969 study. This study examined travel characteristics in New Delhi. Later, in 1984, the Urban Arts Commission proposed a multi-modal transport system. They suggested three underground corridors to help the city. Between 1981 and 1998, the city's population doubled. The number of vehicles increased five-fold during this time. This caused high traffic congestion and heavy pollution. In 1995, the government created the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). Elattuvalapil Sreedharan served as the first managing director. Mangu Singh succeeded him in 2011.

Building the system required careful management to avoid delays. The DMRC was given autonomy to act as a special-purpose vehicle. This gave the company power to hire staff and control funds. They hired the Hong Kong MTRC as a technical consultant. This helped with construction techniques and rapid-transit operations. One major challenge occurred in 2000 regarding track gauge. The Ministry of Railways required the use of broad gauge. This was different from the DMRC's preferred standard gauge. This decision resulted in an additional capital expenditure of ₹1,100 crore.

Technological progress has led to very modern operations. The Magenta Line and Pink Line both use driverless operations. Driverless operations began on the Magenta Line in December 2021. The Pink Line followed in November 2021. This makes the Delhi Metro one of the largest driverless networks globally. It holds the fourth position in the world for such networks. The system uses Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC). This technology allows trains to run at a 90-second headway. A headway is the time interval between two trains.

The Delhi Metro also plays a vital role in environmental protection. In 2011, the United Nations certified the DMRC. It was the first metro system in the world to receive carbon credits. These credits were awarded for reducing greenhouse-gas emissions. The system reduces annual carbon emission levels by 630,000 tonnes. This helps improve the air quality in the city.
