The KTX is the first high-speed rail system in South Korea.

It is a very important way for people to travel across the country. Most of these fast trains start their journeys at Seoul Station.

From there, they travel to many different cities. This system helps move people quickly through the nation's main traffic areas. It was built to help solve problems with crowded roads and older train lines.

To make these trains move so fast, the tracks must be very special. Much of the high-speed line is built on tall bridges called viaducts.

Other parts of the track go through long tunnels under mountains. For example, the Wonhyo Tunnel is one of the longest tunnels in Korea. The tracks are also electrified to give the trains power. This allows the trains to reach very high speeds during their trips. Engineers designed the paths to be smooth so the ride stays steady.

Building this system was a huge project that took many years. Planning began much earlier with studies from experts in France and Japan. Construction on the main line from Seoul to Busan started on June 30, 1992.

The first KTX services officially launched on April 1, 2004. This first stage of the project was finished after 12 years of work. It cost about 12,737.7 billion won to complete that first part.

South Korea has used different types of trains over the years. The first trains were based on a French design called the TGV Réseau.

Later, Korea developed its own high-speed trains. The KTX-Sancheon began its regular service in 2010. More recent trains include the KTX-Eum, which arrived in 2021.

The newest type is the KTX-Cheongryong, which started in 2024.

These fast trains connect people to the world around them. You might recognize the way they zoom past regular trains on the tracks. The government has a big plan to make travel even faster. They want to help people reach 95% of the country in under two hours. This will happen by upgrading many more lines across the nation. It makes traveling between far-away cities feel much easier for everyone.
