It helps many people move through the city every single day. This system is very important for the people living in Montreal. It is the second busiest rapid transit system in all of Canada. In North America, it is the fourth busiest system.

It connects the north, east, and center of the Island of Montreal. The trains also reach places like Longueuil and Laval.

This train system works in a very special way. Instead of using steel wheels, the trains use rubber tires.

This choice was inspired by the subway in Paris, France. Using rubber tires allows the trains to accelerate much faster. It also helps the trains climb steeper hills underground. Most of the tunnels were carved directly through solid rock. This is different from many other subway systems.

Getting this system built took a very long time. In 1861, people first used horse-drawn cars to travel. Later, the city used streetcars on the streets. However, the streets became too crowded for the streetcars to be on time. Many different groups tried to build a subway for fifty years. Some plans failed because of World War I and the Great Depression.

Finally, Mayor Jean Drapeau helped make the project happen. Construction began in May 1962.

When the Metro first opened on October 14, 1966, it was small. It started with only 22 stations on two lines.

Today, the system has grown to 68 stations on four lines. The first two lines were the Green Line and the Orange Line. The Yellow Line was finished in 1967 for the Expo 67 World's Fair.
