It helps people travel across the city of Istanbul. The city is split by a deep body of water. This water is called the Bosporus strait. Because of this, the metro lines do not touch. Most lines stay on one side or the other. Eight lines run on the European side. Three lines run on the Asian side.

To cross the water, people use the Marmaray rail line. This line connects the two sides in many places.

The system is very large. It has 160 stations in use.

Workers are building 36 more stations right now. The metro is the 21st longest system in the world. It is also the 4th longest in Europe. The oldest part is the M1 line. It opened on 3 September 1989. Some lines, like the M5, are fully automated. This means they can run without a driver. People use a special card to pay for rides. This card is called the Istanbulkart.
