The university even helps start new companies. It has supported over two hundred unique ventures through its special centres. This helps turn new ideas into real businesses.

The school has a very long history. It began on May 23, 1883. At that time, it was called Auckland University College. It started in a very unusual place. The first students used a disused courthouse and a jail.

There were only 95 students at the very start. Only four teachers worked there back then. These teachers taught subjects like chemistry, natural sciences, classics, and mathematics. By 1901, the number of students had grown to 156. Most of these people were studying part-time to become teachers or law clerks.

Many important people helped the university grow over the years. John Chapman Andrew helped lead the school during its early days. In the 1930s, the college began to focus more on research. This was a very important change for the school. In 1961, the University of Auckland Act made it an official university.

Today, the university is a major part of life in Auckland. It has many large buildings and modern facilities. The university spent a lot of money to grow. In 2009, it started a ten-year plan to spend one billion dollars on new buildings.
