It began in 1883. Back then, it was called Auckland University College. At first, the school was very small. It had only 95 students and four teachers. These teachers worked in an old courthouse and jail.

Over time, the school grew. In the 1930s, teachers began to do more research. This helped the college flourish. In 1961, it became the University of Auckland. The school has several main areas called campuses. The City Campus is the oldest part. The Grafton Campus is where people study health and medicine.

Today, the school is very big. It has about 44,000 students. It is the largest university in New Zealand. In 2021, the school received a Māori name. It is called Waipapa Taumata Rau. This name was a gift from Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei. The school also has a special space for new ideas. It is called the Unleash Space.
