Whistler used a specific way to create this image. He wanted to paint his mother standing up. However, she was too uncomfortable to pose standing for a long time. Because of this, he painted her sitting down instead.

The painting uses a very limited set of colors. These colors are mostly shades of grey and black. Whistler even designed the frame that holds the painting. He believed in a way of thinking called "art for art's sake." This means he wanted people to see the beauty of the colors and shapes. He was often annoyed when people only saw it as a portrait.

Whistler painted this work in 1871. He was living in London at the time. His mother was staying with him at 96 Cheyne Walk in Chelsea.

He showed the painting at the Royal Academy of Art in 1872. It was listed as entry number 941 in their records. The academy almost rejected the painting. This event made his relationship with the British art world difficult. This was the last painting he ever sent to the academy for approval. Later, the French state bought the painting in 1891. It moved to the Musée du Luxembourg before going to the Musée d'Orsay.

This painting has become a symbol for many things. In the United States, it is seen as an icon for motherhood and family values.
