Grant Wood created this work on a surface called beaverboard.

He first saw the house in Eldon, Iowa. A local painter named John Sharp drove him around the area. Wood noticed the Dibble House and thought it was very paintable. He even sketched the house on the back of an envelope. He later made a sketch in oil paint on paperboard. He made the roof steeper and the window longer than the real house.

Wood chose specific people to act as models for his art.

His sister, Nan Wood Graham, modeled for the woman. She wore a colonial print apron with special trim. She even used old trim from her mother's dresses. The man was modeled after the family dentist, Dr. Byron McKeeby. He wears overalls and holds a three-pronged pitchfork. While many thought they were a married couple, Wood said they were father and daughter.

At first, the painting caused quite a stir in the news.

Some people in Iowa were angry about the painting. They felt it made them look too grim or serious. However, the meaning of the art changed over time. During the Great Depression, people saw the pair differently. They saw them as strong survivors of hard times. The painting won a bronze medal and $300 at a competition.

Today, the image is used in many different ways.
