Wood saw the real house in Eldon, Iowa. He thought it was a very paintable home. He used his sister, Nan, as the model for the woman. She wore a colonial print apron. The man was modeled after the family dentist. He wears overalls and holds a large pitchfork. Some people thought the pair were husband and wife. However, Wood said they were a father and his daughter.

At first, some people in Iowa were upset. They thought the painting made them look too grim. Later, the meaning of the art changed. During the Great Depression, people saw the pair as strong. They looked like survivors who could face hard times. The painting is now in the Art Institute of Chicago. It is one of the most known works in America. Many movies and shows even copy the pose today.
