He lived from 1853 to 1914 in Paris. He wanted to find a better way to identify people. Before his ideas, police only used names or simple photos. This made it easy for people to hide their true identities. Bertillon wanted a scientific way to tell people apart. His work changed how law enforcement uses data to solve crimes.

His new method was called anthropometry.

This system used specific body measurements to create a record. He measured five main parts of the body. These included the length of the head and the head's breadth. He also measured the middle finger, the left foot, and the cubit. Bertillon also created the mug shot to complete his records.

This gave police a standard way to photograph people.

Bertillon began his police career in 1879. He started as a clerk at the Prefecture of Police in Paris. He noticed that many criminals were being arrested again and again. This high rate of repeat crimes motivated him to act. He worked on his measurements in his own spare time. He even used La Santé Prison in Paris for his studies. Some people at the prison even teased him while he worked.

His system was not always perfect or fair. It was mostly designed for adult men with short hair. Because of this, it did not work well for women or children. In Minneapolis, the police used his system on Black women. Many of these women used fake names like "Mamie" to avoid being caught. Bertillon also made a big mistake during the Dreyfus affair.

He gave bad evidence that helped convict an innocent man named Alfred Dreyfus. Later, mathematicians proved his handwriting theories had no scientific value.

Even though fingerprinting eventually replaced his system, his ideas were very important. He also studied footprints and how much force was used to break into buildings. Many famous stories use his name or his ideas. The detective Sherlock Holmes is linked to his work in books. You can also find mentions of him in many mystery novels and TV shows. He helped start the field of using science to solve crimes.
