In 1896, he found a very big secret. A man named Alfred Dreyfus had been found guilty of a crime. Picquart looked at the evidence very closely. He found a note called a memorandum. This note actually belonged to Major Ferdinand Walsin Esterhazy. Picquart realized that Dreyfus was not the real culprit.

Finding the truth was a very hard job for Picquart. High-ranking generals told him to hide what he found. Some officers even tried to stop his work. A man named Major Hubert-Joseph Henry was one of them. Because Picquart would not lie, he lost his position. He was sent to Africa in December 1896. He led a regiment in Sousse, Tunisia. Later, people even accused Picquart of a crime. They said he had made the note himself. He had to wait for a court to look at the case.

Eventually, the truth came out for everyone to see. In 1906, the court said Dreyfus was innocent. This also proved that Picquart was right all along.
