He was born in 1849 in a place called Saint-Béat. His family had roots in Corsica and Italy. As a young student, he was known for being very hard-working. He was also very gifted in math and many different languages. During his early years, he served in the Franco-Prussian War. While he was a prisoner of war, he used the time to learn German. He even kept a notebook written in German, English, and Italian.

Much of his career was spent working in French colonies. He served in places like Senegal, Reunion, and Martinique. In 1886, he became a lieutenant-colonel and later governed the French Sudan. During this time, he stopped a rebellion led by Mahmadu Lamine.

Later, in 1896, he was promoted to General and became the Governor of Madagascar. He used a special way to rule called the "oil spot" method. This meant spreading influence slowly to different areas. He also built many useful things like roads, railways, and schools.

His time in Madagascar involved many difficult and serious decisions. He reorganized the French forces to take control of the island. In 1897, he ended the local monarchy and sent the Queen into exile.

He also used a rule called the code de l'indigenat. This rule allowed French officials to give out punishments very quickly. While he was a military leader, he also acted as a builder. He focused on making markets and medical services for the people.

When the First World War began in 1914, Gallieni returned to France. He was named the Military Governor of Paris to defend the city. This was a very hard job because the city was under threat. He had to manage many different groups of soldiers to protect the people. In a famous move, some soldiers were even rushed to the front in Paris taxicabs. This helped during the First Battle of the Marne. He worked very hard to plan how the army would fight. He stayed up all night with his staff to make these plans.

Gallieni's life was full of important roles and big changes. After his work in Paris, he became the Minister of War in 1915. He later resigned from that post in March 1916. He had disagreements with other leaders about how the war was going. Gallieni died later in 1916, which was a sad time for France. In 1921, the country gave him a very high honor. They named him a Marshal of France even after he had passed away. His life shows how one person can influence many different parts of the world.
