He was born in Mulhouse, Alsace, in 1859. His family was Jewish and quite successful. His father ran a cotton mill and a weaving factory. Because of a war, his family had to move to Switzerland. Later, they moved to Paris. This early move made Dreyfus want to join the military. He graduated from a military school in 1880. He worked hard to become a captain in the artillery.

In 1894, a major crisis began in France. A note was found in a wastebasket at the German Embassy. This note contained military secrets. The army thought a spy had written it. They wrongly accused Dreyfus of being that spy. This happened because of antisemitism, which is unfair treatment of Jewish people.

Dreyfus was arrested and sent to a prison called Devil's Island. In 1895, the army even held a public ceremony to strip him of his rank. He cried out that he was innocent during this hard time. He remained a loyal soldier even while being treated unfairly.

New evidence soon showed the truth. A man named Ferdinand Walsin Esterhazy was the real spy. A military officer named Georges Picquart found this out. However, the army leaders tried to hide the truth to save face. This caused a huge political scandal in the French Third Republic. A famous writer named Émile Zola wrote a famous letter called "J'Accuse...!" in 1898. This letter accused leaders of covering up the crime.

Many people began to fight for Dreyfus's rights.

There were many legal battles to fix the mistake. In 1899, Dreyfus was given a pardon by President Émile Loubet. This allowed him to leave prison, but he was not yet fully cleared. He lived under house arrest for a few years. Finally, in 1906, a military commission said he was innocent.

He was allowed back into the army as a major. He was also made a Knight of the Legion of Honour. Even though he was cleared, some people in France still did not like him. One man even tried to shoot him in 1908.

Later in life, Dreyfus served during World War I. He was a major of artillery and served at the Western Front. He saw action at places like Verdun and the Aisne.
