Klaus Barbie was a German officer during World War II. He was a member of the Nazi Party and the SS. He worked for the security service known as the SD. In 1942, he was sent to the city of Lyon in France. There, he became the head of the local Gestapo. He was a very cruel man who hurt many people. Because of this, people called him the "Butcher of Lyon."

Barbie was responsible for many terrible things in France. He helped arrest and deport many Jewish people and members of the French Resistance. In 1944, he ordered the deportation of 44 Jewish children from an orphanage in Izieu. He also arrested Jean Moulin, a famous leader of the French Resistance. Barbie used torture to get information from his prisoners. He even used dogs to hurt people. For his actions, Adolf Hitler gave him the Iron Cross in 1943.

After the war ended, Barbie did not go to prison right away. United States intelligence services used him as an agent. They wanted his help to fight against communism in Europe. The U.S. even helped him escape to a country called Bolivia. This helped him stay a free man for many years. In 1983, the United States apologized to France for this. They admitted they helped a man who was wanted for crimes.

Barbie lived in Bolivia for 30 years using a fake name. He used the name Klaus Altmann to hide who he was. He worked with high-ranking leaders in the Bolivian government. He taught them how to use torture to stop people they did not like. He was also linked to groups that sold weapons and worked with drug cartels.

Some people believe he even helped plan a coup in 1980.

It took a long time for justice to reach him. In 1972, two people named Serge and Beate Klarsfeld found his secret name. They were hunters who looked for Nazi criminals. They found information that showed he was living in South America. Eventually, Barbie was arrested and sent back to France in 1983. A court found him guilty of crimes against humanity. He was sent to prison for life and died there in 1991.
