Anthony Blunt was a very famous expert on art. He studied how people painted and built things long ago. He was a professor at the University of London. He also led a special school called the Courtauld Institute of Art.

Because he knew so much, he even helped the royal family. He was the Surveyor of the Queen's Pictures. This job meant he looked after the art owned by the royals. He was very polite and good at his work. Many people thought he was a great teacher and writer.

Blunt had a secret life that was very different from his art life. He was a spy for the Soviet Union. He was part of a group known as the Cambridge Five. These were people who studied at Cambridge University and worked for the Soviets.

He was the fourth person in this group to be found out. He started doing this work between the 1930s and the 1950s. He even had a special code name, which was "Tony." He used his position to find other people to help the Soviets.

During the Second World War, his secret work became very serious. Blunt joined the British Army in 1939. Later, he worked for a group called MI5. This group was meant to keep Britain safe.

While working there, he shared secret information with the Soviets. He shared details about German army plans. This was very dangerous because the information was meant to be hidden. If the Germans found out, they might change their secret codes. This could make it harder for the British to stay safe.

Blunt's life changed a lot after the war ended. In 1945, he began working with the royal collection. King George VI even asked him to help find old letters in Germany. He traveled to a place called Friedrichshof Castle to help.

He was very good at identifying important papers. For many years, he kept his secret life hidden from most people. In 1964, he finally confessed that he had been a spy. He was not sent to jail because of a special deal.

Even after his confession, many people did not know the truth. It was not until 1979 that the news became public. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher told the world about his secret.

Because of this, he lost his title as a knight. A knighthood is a special honor given by the Queen. He lived for a few more years after this happened. He died in March 1983. His life showed how someone can be both a great expert and a secret spy.
