Albert Speer was a prominent German architect and a high-ranking official in Nazi Germany.

He served as the Minister of Armaments and War Production during World War II. Speer was also a very close ally of Adolf Hitler. This relationship allowed him to become a member of Hitler's inner circle. He used his architectural training to serve the Nazi Party's goals. His career moved from designing buildings to managing the entire German war industry.

Speer's early life was shaped by his studies in architecture. He was born in Mannheim in 1905 to Luise and Albert Speer. He studied at the University of Karlsruhe first. Due to the 1923 hyperinflation crisis, he later moved to the Technische Hochschule München. Finally, he studied at the Technische Hochschule Berlin-Chalottenburg under Heinrich Tessenow. Speer admired Tessenow and became his assistant in 1927. This position was a significant honor for a 22-year-old man. He also maintained a long friendship with fellow student Rudolf Wolters.

Speer joined the Nazi Party in January 1931. He became member number 474,481. His architectural skills soon brought him to the attention of Nazi leaders. He first met Hitler while designing plans for the 1933 Nuremberg Rally. This work earned him the role of Commissioner for the Artistic and Technical Presentation of Party Rallies. After Paul Troost died in 1934, Speer became the Party's chief architect. He designed the Zeppelinfeld stadium in Nuremberg, which held 340,000 people. He also used dramatic lighting effects, known as the Cathedral of Light, for night events.

In 1937, Hitler appointed Speer as the General Building Inspector for Berlin. This role gave him extraordinary powers over the city. He planned to transform Berlin into a massive capital called Germania. His designs included a three-mile-long boulevard called the Prachtstrasse. At one end, he planned the Volkshalle, a massive domed hall for 180,000 people.

He also planned a giant triumphal arch at the other end. However, the outbreak of World War II in 1939 forced him to abandon these grand plans.

Speer's responsibilities shifted from architecture to war production in February 1942. He was appointed Reich Minister of Armaments and War Production. He claimed to have achieved an "armaments miracle" to keep Germany fighting. He used misleading statistics to promote this success. In 1944, he created a task force to increase fighter aircraft production. This effort relied heavily on the exploitation of slave labor. Speer was responsible for the Central Department for Resettlement, which evicted Jewish tenants from their homes in Berlin.

After the war, Speer faced justice at the Nuremberg trials. He was one of 24 major defendants charged by the International Military Tribunal. The court found him guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity. These convictions were primarily due to his use of slave labor. He narrowly avoided a death sentence and was instead sentenced to 20 years in prison. He spent most of his sentence in Spandau Prison.

Speer was eventually released in 1966 after serving his full term.

Following his release, Speer became a famous and controversial author. He wrote autobiographies like *Inside the Third Reich* and *Spandau: The Secret Diaries*. These books were very successful because the public was fascinated by his perspective. Speer tried to create an image of himself as an apolitical technocrat. He claimed he deeply regretted not discovering the crimes of the Nazi regime earlier. This perception is often called the "Speer myth."

Modern historians have challenged the Speer myth. In the 1980s, researchers found that his "armaments miracle" was largely Nazi propaganda. Historians like Adam Tooze and Martin Kitchen argued that Speer was not an apolitical technician. Evidence has shown that Speer was intimately aware of the Holocaust. He was involved in the systems that drove the Nazi war machine. Speer died of a stroke in 1981.
