Beneš tried to find solutions to avoid war. He offered a "Third Plan" to create 20 autonomous cantons. Later, he proposed a "Fourth Plan" to turn Czechoslovakia into a federation. However, these offers were rejected. He wanted to defend his country, but he did not want to fight Germany alone. He sought support from Great Powers like Britain. Eventually, the Munich Agreement led to a German occupation of his country.
During World War II, Beneš lived in exile in the United Kingdom.
