The Russian Empire was a massive state that dominated northern Eurasia for nearly two centuries. It officially began in November 1721 and lasted until September 1917.

At its greatest extent in the late 19th century, the empire covered roughly one-sixth of the world's landmass. This enormous size made it the third-largest empire in human history. Only the British and Mongol empires were larger in total area.

The empire was incredibly diverse, containing many different ethnic, linguistic, and religious groups. An 1897 census recorded a total population of 125.6 million people. This population lived across a territory that stretched from the Arctic Ocean to the Black Sea.

The foundations of this empire were laid long before its official proclamation. In the 15th century, Ivan III helped create a centralized Russian national state. He secured independence against the Tatars and expanded his domain significantly. His grandson, Ivan IV, became the first monarch to be crowned tsar of all Russia in 1547. The term tsar refers to an absolute monarch with total power. Between 1550 and 1700, the Russian state grew by a steady average rate each year. During this time, the Russians also began expanding into Siberia to find profitable furs.

Peter I, also known as Peter the Great, fundamentally transformed the Russian state. He officially proclaimed the Russian Empire in 1721 after the Great Northern War.

Peter wanted a "window to the sea" to connect Russia to Europe. To achieve this, he fought Sweden to gain access to the Baltic Sea. He moved the capital from Moscow to the new, modern city of Saint Petersburg. This city was built on the Neva River to reflect Western European styles. Peter also reorganized the government into an absolutist state. He replaced the old council of nobles, known as the Boyar Duma, with a nine-member Senate.

Following Peter, several other leaders shaped the empire through expansion and reform. Catherine the Great used diplomacy and conquest to grow the Russian state further.

Later, Alexander I helped defeat Napoleon and strengthened Russia's role in Europe. The empire also saw significant changes under Alexander II. In 1861, he initiated the emancipation of 23 million serfs. Serfs were peasants who were legally tied to the land they worked. This was a massive social shift for the Russian population. By the late 1800s, the empire controlled the Caucasus and much of Central Asia.

Despite its power, the empire faced deep internal struggles toward the end of the 19th century. A devastating famine occurred between 1891 and 1892, killing hundreds of thousands of people. This tragedy caused widespread discontent among the population. As the last absolute monarchy in Europe, Russia saw the rise of radical political ideas. Many people began to support communism. After the Revolution of 1905, Tsar Nicholas II allowed a national parliament called the State Duma. However, the tsar still held almost all the political power. This tension between the people and the monarchy grew stronger over time.

The outbreak of the First World War proved to be a breaking point. Russia suffered several military defeats that angered the population. In 1917, mass unrest and army mutinies led to the February Revolution. This event caused Nicholas II to abdicate his throne. A Russian Provisional Government took control, and a republic was proclaimed. However, the new government struggled with food shortages and the ongoing war. In the October Revolution, the Bolsheviks overthrew the republic.

This led to a violent period known as the Russian Civil War. The Bolsheviks eventually won and established the Soviet Union. Russia was one of four major empires to collapse during this era.

The legacy of the Russian Empire is visible in the vast geography of Eurasia. The empire's reach once extended as far east as Alaska, Hawaii, and California. It was a complex system of absolute rule, religious influence, and rapid modernization. The transition from a collection of principalities to a global empire changed the course of world history. The collapse of the empire in 1917 marked the end of the tsarist era and the beginning of a new, different political age.
