history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Rurikids were a very famous and long-lasting royal family. They are known as one of the oldest royal houses in all of Europe. This family ruled for more than 700 years across many different lands. They began their rule with a prince named Rurik. Tradition says he established himself at a place called Novgorod in the year 862.

Some modern scholars have questions about these early days. They wonder if Rurik was a real person or just a legend. Some think the story of the "Calling of the Varangians" might be a myth.

As time passed, the family grew and split into many different groups. They first ruled a large area known as Kievan Rus'. By the middle of the twelfth century, this large area broke apart. It became many smaller lands called principalities. Each of these smaller lands was ruled by a different branch of the Rurikid family.

One branch was called the Monomakhovichi. Another group was known as the Olegovychi. A third group was called the Romanovichi. These branches helped manage the many different parts of the land.

Different branches of the family focused on different places. The Romanovichi ruled in the southwestern lands. This area included places like Galicia and Volhynia. In 1253, a leader named Daniel was even crowned king of Ruthenia. The Olegovychi ruled in places like Chernigov and Severia. They held power until the early 14th century. Eventually, these lands were changed by the growing power of Lithuania and Moscow. The family's many branches showed how much the land had changed.

In the north and northeast, a different branch became very strong. These were the Daniilovichi of Moscow. By the 15th century, a leader named Ivan III took control. He threw off the control of the Golden Horde. He took the title of sovereign of all Russia. Later, Ivan IV was crowned as the Tsar of all Russia. The Rurikid line continued to rule as Tsars until the year 1598. After they finished their rule, the House of Romanov took over.

We can still learn about the Rurikids through science and symbols. Scientists have studied the DNA of people from this family. They found that the lineage included people from eastern Scandinavia and Central Europe. They also found connections to East Asia through Siberia. The trident, or tryzub, is a symbol that is linked to the old lands of Rus'. This symbol was even used by independent Ukraine in the 20th century. The story of the Rurikids helps us understand the history of many modern nations.
