He ruled for many years from 1645 until 1676. Alexis was the first Tsar to sign laws using his own power. One major law was passed in 1649. This law was called the Sobornoye Ulozheniye. It helped strengthen the ties between the ruler and the lower nobility. He was a man who cared about tradition and ritual. Some people even called him "the most quiet" leader.

Alexis made many big changes to how his country worked. He worked with a tutor named Boris Morozov to help run the land. Morozov wanted to use ideas from Western Europe. They tried to make the government more efficient. They also tried to limit the power of foreign traders. However, things were not always easy for the people. In 1648, the government asked for much higher taxes. This made many people in Moscow very angry. A large protest called the Salt Riot broke out in May 1648.

His rule saw many different struggles and conflicts. In the 1660s, wars caused the Russian economy to struggle. The government tried to make more copper coins to gain money. This caused a financial crisis and led to the Copper Riot in 1662. There was also a rebellion led by a man named Stenka Razin. Razin led the Cossacks in a revolt in southern Russia.

Religion also caused big changes in his time. A leader named Patriarch Nikon made new rules for the church. These changes were not popular with everyone. People who disagreed with the new rules became known as the Old Believers.
